Long established family-run restaurant specializing in local cuisine, especially soba (buckwheat) noodles and tempura. A good selection of local Nagano sake is also on the menu. Come join us for some delicious local delicacies in a relaxed atmosphere... centrally located not far from the station and close to the castle. Please note that we moved from our previous location and are now located in the grounds of Yohashira Shrine next to Nawate Street (Frog Street). We have changed locations as of July 2018 but we still serve the same great food that locals and visitors have come to love. We are open from 11 to 9 seven days a week!!!

In a country known for thoughtful service and hospitality, this place takes the cake! There is such a noticeable emphasis on the dining experience. The tempura is exceptional, and generous! The soba is fantastic. The local sake flight is a terrific experience. The staff are welcoming and generous, to the point where we received two extra glasses of sake each, an extra carafe of soba dipping sauce, a wonderful dessert, and complimentary buckwheat tea bags.Come hungry. Come with cash (no cards accepted). You will leave full, content, impressed, and above all taken care of.

Very good atmosphere, right next to the shrine (be aware: they moved recently (?), the location on google is correct), not to forget really good food (had soba). For me personally an unforgettable experience, staff was super friendly, even had a nice talk and she gave me a package of the tasty tea they serve for free!ã‚ã‚ŠãŒã¨ã†ã”ã–ã„ã¾ã—ãŸ!Definitely go check it out:)

A short walk from the train station and our hotel. This restaurant is a good food option for those who are looking for local soba and basashi (horse sashimi). Nothing much was open in the area at around 4pm to 5pm but Kobayashi Soba was open so it was nice. Just one issue, the tempura was slightly too oily but otherwise it's a great place to dine.

We love the food, very delicious and the price is average. The place is also very decent and quiet environment. Recommended!! Just a few minutes walk away from Matsumoto Castle. Cheers!! No afternoon break, open from morning to evening is very good for travellers like us.

Good place to try Kobayishi/Bashi, food was pretty good, the only problem was that the waitress forgot to bring out the boiling water to dip my noodles in.

Excellent soba and tempura vegetables! The service was very friendly and understanding, offering vegetarian options and adjustments to the menu.

This restaurant has one of the best hand made Sobas I’ve ever had. The restaurant has been around since 1889 and has a simple, and English friendly menu. Also, great atmosphere, cleanliness, vibe and tempura!

Great atmosphere and location. The staff were super friendly and we sat at the large table so got chatting to other diners. The food was really good, we had the tempura soba. The home-made ice cream is delicious. Highly recommend a visit

Small and simple menu of good food that’s executed very well. We had the cold soba with tempura and we’re very pleased with it. There’s a definitive high level of care both in preparing the food and making sure that the “gaijin†that we ate know exactly how to eat the soba (put the seasoning in the dipping sauce, if you like grate some wasabi on your noodle, place a little of the noodle in the dipping sauce and, then, slurp away).

Delicious food (and fantastic desserts)! Each dish was prepared with care. The restaurant interior is also very beautiful. Would recommend this restaurant those passing by. The ice cream with soba jelly was delicious.

Good soba in the central area of Matsumoto. It was fun to grind our own wasabi. The tempura set was delicious and satisfying. Also the tea is yummy, and this shop makes their own. You get an endless teapot of “sobacha†with your meal, and they even give you some tea bags for free when you leave. I was disappointed that they didn’t have the tradition Matsumoto style of soba. Definitely recommend if you’re in Matsumoto!

We came here last year and found the place so inviting, foods ear good and authentic. The soba has a great consistency and the flavours are well balanced. The owners were so kind in our last trip, we decided to make a special trip to come back this year and buy a pile of tea and eat again..encore!!!Everything is tasty and though in a new location....it's still awesome

Very good experience, excellent taste and can feel the smooth texture of the soba, worth the walk from Matsumoto station. Must try for all who visit the Matsumoto castle.

Insanely refreshing and tasty soba with superb ice cream if you get the set. The set comes with many dishes, each are star quality. Would definitely recommend.

First of all, this place is very beautiful and has a wonderful atmosphere. The soba was excellent and the staff takes the time to explain the proper way to eat each dish. My Japanese is pretty poor but it was not a problem because the menu had English descriptions and it seemed that many of the staff had very good English also. Delicious! I can't wait to come back with friends.

Nice japanese noodle restaurant near a shrine

Had a wonderful meal here on our first night in Matsumoto and it was so good! I loved the buckwheat tea, and it was lovely that they gave us a sample as we left too. The staff were very patient with us and helped explain what everything was and how to eat some of the dishes as it was our first traditional soba meal in Japan! It's in a handy spot next to the shrine and the river too, especially if you eat too much like us and need to walk it off afterwards!

Cosy place. Perfect for a date. Employees were super friendly and could communicate in English. menu are available in English.Good quality Soba but the Trump card was definitely the tempura. Amazing.Recommend.

Had a great experience here - the lady running the restaurant is amazing! She’s happy to tailor the menu to suit dietary requirements. We were able to have vegan soba noodles in a soy/vegetable broth. Was incredible. Free buckwheat tea on the table as well as some take away bags, fresh wasabi offered also. A must visit for when in town - easy 5 stars

Great Service and Food of course!!

Walked in by accident, the soba is the best I tasted so far! The tempura shrimps and veggies are absolute delicious! Like the way they fried with thin layer of flowers on the tempura so you can taste the flavor of the food! Will definitely visit again!

We got the cold soba and tempura set, everything was amazing. The owner explained everything to us and he even gifted us an ice cream for dessert and some tea. It was an amazing experience

Gentle staff, menu in English, great soba. They kindly explain how to use the many different sauces, and after having paid they gave me sobacha teabags in two different tastes. It is always very crowded, so prepare to wait even 30 minutes, but it is totally worth.

We can here after visiting the Matsumoto Castle. The host was very gracious and brought us to our seat. Note that an English menu is available. I had the cold Soba noodle with 8 pieces of tempura, 2 shrimp & 6 vegetables (asparagus, red pepper, eggplant, baby corn, mushrooms, & root vegetable). Great texture on the noodles. Tempura was good too. We went for the sake tasting. The host gave us a welcome sparkling sake and 5 other for tasting. A card was provided with stickers of the types of sake. This was great experience as it allowed us to sample some local sake within a short time span. Would definitely recommend and go again.

Fresh grated wasabi that u can do it yourself! It cant get any fresher

We had two bowls of soba noodles in broth. Nice delicate noodles and broth! Fish cakes weren’t really my thing, but obviously a local ingredient??

Great food and great experience. English speaking staff

Once I asked about vegetarian options, they offered an off-menu broth which was delicious! I had the soba noodles with veggie tempura. The vegetables tasted very fresh and yummy. I also tried the sake sampler, which is a nice way to get to know five different local sakes. The place is very cozy, they serve buckwheat tea with every meal (which you can also buy in tea bags to take home), and you get to grate your own wasabi!
Karen Guan
It was delicious! The chef is very kind. Would recommend to those in the area!

Lovely place to slurp some soba noodles. The herring boiled in sweet soy sauce is to die for
PYong Lee
Nice place for some soba just beside the shrine as we walk to the castle. Good service and the waitress takes time to explain the various ways to enjoy the food.
Cherrie Wang
Average soba, very overpriced because of the location. Recommend you eat elsewhere, but the pure novelty of the grate-your-own wasabi made it kind of fun. Food and service were both fine and not outstanding. They give you a gift of a few free buckwheat tea bags after you pay, which is quite nice!
Kristen Murnane
Amazing food and service. Pretty nice locale. Food was a little pricier for the area but in the end soooo worth it. Best soba I have ever had. Service was great. They do have an english menu and speak limited amount. We both had hot soba dishes and split the sake tasting (fantastic selection). Walked away with a soba tea gift. So very kind. Highly recommend this place. Would love to return one day.

This was such a nice place to eat dinner. The atmosphere was so inviting and relaxing. The tea was great and went great with the meal. The quality of the menu was good and the menu item I got was 1600 yen. The food was so super yummy. Everything was well cooked and it was delicious. I loved the fact that after I paid, the hosts gave me a few packets of tea to take away for free which was so super kind.

The duck with yuzu sauce is really good. Do recommend.

Great soba and tampura, taste fresh and nice staff, the view from the window also very nice.

A welcoming and warm (literally, good for a cold day) bar that's been around for over 100 years this place knows how to make soba. Hand made noodles, complimentary tea and wet towel before you order from a menu that is both Japanese and English. Very reasonably priced with sets about 1600 Yen and bowls for about 700 Yen. The speed of service, delicious food and the helpful staff make this a must visit.

Absolute amazing soba and tempura. The owner is a kind person. Don't worry about the etiquettes, they will teach you.
